Imago Mundi. Of Margins and Other Heroes

Imago Mundi. Of Margins and Other Heroes

In the framework of EMOP Berlin 2025 (European Month of Photography), the Romanian Cultural Institute in Berlin presented a solo exhibition by Romanian photographer Nicu Ilfoveanu. The artist has created a subtle visual atlas, capturing the everyday aesthetics of contemporary Romania.

  • Ilfoveanu’s photographic work was accompanied by curatorial commentary from Ioana Mandeal, enriching the narrative with thoughtful reflections.

Nathalie Opris, herself a designer with Romanian roots but based in Berlin, shaped the spatial and visual arc of the exhibition—bridging cultural contexts with a perspective rooted in both places. She translated the photographer’s journey into a coherent storyline unfolding through the gallery space. With minimal yet deliberate spatial interventions—using wall colours, custom furniture, and lighting—she echoed Ilfoveanu’s roles as observer, collector, projectionist, and interpreter.

Her spatial concept guided the exhibition’s rhythm by quietly sharpening the viewer’s perception. The introductory text, printed in white on transparent paper, reveals itself only upon closer inspection. It carries the idea of the blueprint, a layer within a larger scheme.

A calibrated interplay of warm and cool shades of grey subtly divided the gallery into two distinct atmospheres—hovering between light and shadow, natural and artificial illumination.
